MacDuffie’s Winter Musical Mamma Mia! Sells out in Record Time!
February 28, 2020
This year’s Winter Musical, Mamma Mia!, sold out all 300 tickets (100 for each performance) within 30 hours of them going on sale, according to Director and Producer Becky Beth Benedict.
The tickets for the show went on sale on January 30, and they sold out the next day. All 3 performances of the musical typically sell out after only a few days, but none sold out as fast as Mamma Mia!, according to Benedict.
“The last time we were in a situation like this was probably when we did Chicago, and that would have been in 2016, [and] it did not sell as fast as this.”
Benedict believes the reason Mamma Mia! sold out is because it is part of popular culture, since it involves two young people getting married, a trend that is more relevant in modern society. She also thinks that MacDuffie students are familiar with the movies “Mamma Mia!” and “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” the latter of which came out 2 years ago.
As of right now, it is not possible to fit more people into the Little Theater to allow for more tickets to be sold. Benedict said, “I cannot fit more seats and still have room for people to get into the room and out of the room, and follow fire code.”
Benedict hopes that as MacDuffie expands its campus, an auditorium could be built so that it can accommodate more people to see the shows.
For those who do not have tickets to see Mamma Mia!, the Arts Department announced that it allowed people to attend the dress rehearsal that took place on January 27. Benedict said that the rehearsal would not be like the official show night because the actors and musicians have not had many opportunities to work with each other.
“People will have to be understanding, but if that’s their only way they get to see it, I am allowing that.”
